real stories
While the
child's names have been changed in the below stories to protect
their welfare,
their
stories are real. A child left in a hospital.
Thrown on a garbage heap. Abandoned for weeks in the
apartment. These children make it through, perhaps, the most
tumultuous and trying experiences of their life, and oftentimes
under age 2. And then, by nothing short of God's grace...they
come inside the doors of Rehema Home.
jack
At age one,
Jack was found in a local hospital, sitting on the floor of the
clinic after all patients had been treated for the day. He was
left with no one to care for him. After being turned over to a
social worker, Jack was brought to Rehema
Home and tests indicated that he was HIV positive. At the
time, he was extremely malnourished and small for his age. He
was so weak that, by the time he was 18
months old,
he couldn't walk. Given proper nutrition and exercise, he was
tested HIV negative by age two. Now? Jack is very
healthy and ranks at the top of his class. He's also very loud
and mischievous at times, but his compassionate
heart and tendencies to cuddle certainly make up for
it.
raymond
Raymond was
taken to the hospital to be treated for pneumonia when he was one
year old. Although he was brought there by a man and woman,
he was left there, never to be picked up. After being in the
hospital for seven months, Raymond was brought to Rehema at 19
months old. At the time, he was HIV positive and very sick.
After just a few months with proper love and care, Raymond tested
HIV negative. He's now an avid bug
collector, loves reading Scripture, and is a wonderful mentor to the
smaller children.
steph
Steph's mom
was very sick when she gave birth, and just two months later,
was
dying and could no longer take care of her. Her father disappeared after birth,
and there was no immediate family who could care for her.
Born HIV positive, Steph was also very malnourished and sick with
pneumonia. When a social worker brought her to Rehema at three
months old, it was clear that she might die. As a result of
proper medical care and love, Steph became healthy for the first time
in her life and, by age one, was tested negative. Now?
She's a loveable and happy girl. Her favorite thing to do is
to give hugs and when she grows up, she wants to 'be a mama and run Rehema Home.'
chris
When Chris was
brought to Rehema by a social worker as an HIV positive little boy,
he
was examined by a nurse and it was found that from the chest down
to the soles of his feet, he was covered with cigarette burns as a
result of being tortured by his aunt and uncle. This is not a
rarity when extended family
members are forced to bring in children of their relatives who have died from HIV or AIDS, particularly when
they already have their own children. A social worker’s attempt to
rescue Chris by bringing him to Rehema has resulted in one of the
most happy, beautiful children that we’ve ever seen. Today,
Chris has a
contagious belly laugh and loves playing soccer and riding bikes.
zachary
Zachary, an
HIV positive baby, was found in town just after birth, after being
abandoned. He was taken to the hospital where a nurse in the
baby ward cared for him until she could help in finding a home for
Zachary. In talking with the local milkman, he suggested that
she contact a Home that he supplied the milk to. The Home was Rehema,
and Zachary was picked up shortly thereafter. The baby ward
nurse, in hindsight, said that she kept a diary that she wrote in
every day. In it, she consistently prayed for two things:
That
Zachary would be taken under the care of a Christian home, and that
his HIV positive status would turn
negative. A few months later, both prayers came true.
jennifer
Jennifer came
to Rehema after being unwanted at another home because
she was HIV+. The workers there had refused to touch her and the other
children had refused to play with her. As soon as she was brought to Rehema
and stepped out of the car, the kids wanted
to hug her and give her toys to play with. They brought her over to
the swingset and she wouldn’t stop smiling, feeling, for the first
time in her life, that other kids wanted to be her friend. Jennifer
is now as welcoming to new children that come to Rehema as she was the
day that she stepped out of the car that brought her there.
